Ah...the Amazon Fire Stick…just like its name, it's the hottest thing around. In fact the Amazon Fire TV Stick is one of the best selling and most affordable streaming devices on the market today. Not only does it run Android Apps and APK's, it can also be side-loaded with Kodi, the open source media player that runs popular third party addons like Exodus, Zen & Phoenix. Priced at just under $40 and sometimes going on sale for under $30, it offers a remarkably inexpensive option for current day cord cutters.
So why would you ever want to reset it to it's default settings? Well, even a remarkable piece of engineering like the Fire Stick needs a refresh once in a while. Here are just 5 reasons that you may want to reset the device and start over...
1) It Refuses to Recognize Your WiFi Network
This one drives me crazy because sometimes it will drop the signal from my network for no apparent reason. I'll reset my router and modem and it will still fail to recognize the network. This is especially true for the 5GHz band for some reason. Resetting the stick to its default condition will rectify this situation.
Seriously? Why doesn't this damn remote work?! (that's me shaking the thing back and forth and pressing all the buttons several times to try to reconnect)... Then I do what Amazon suggests and hold the remote close to the stick and hold the 'home' button for 10 seconds. What the??? Still not working? Ugh... Time to do a default reset on the stick.
3) You Have Kodi Side-Loaded Onto the Fire TV Stick and Kodi Just Stops Working
You tried resetting Kodi to its default settings and can't even do a fresh start. Even if you can it's still acting real buggy on you. Or you just updated Kodi to its latest version (add version number here) and everything has stopped working right. Help! I can't watch the latest episode of Game of Thrones or Westworld on Kodi! What to do, what to do...hmmm. Yep, it's reset time!
4) You Tried to Watch Something on an IPTV Add On and Kodi Freezes
You can try pressing the 'home' button and going into the Fire Stick settings to Programs> Manage Installed Programs and Force Stop Kodi but if this keeps happening it may be time to do a default reset on the Fire Stick and re-install a fresh copy of Kodi. Problem solved!
5) Refuses to Recognize Your Credentials and Won't Load Your Amazon Library
This one is really frustrating as you've got all this Amazon Prime content at your fingertips but it not matter how many times you enter your credentials it just won't recognize you as you. Double ugh... Don't worry though, a simple default reset will solve your problems.
Now on to the solution...
How to reset your Amazon Fire TV Stick to its default settings...
Warning: doing this causes you to lose all you Amazon settings and any apk's or add ons you may have installed. Not to worry though, once you have signed back into your Amazon account all your Amazon Prime content will reappear, you will just have to re-download any apps that got deleted. You will also have to reinstall Kodi and set that up but I will deal with that in another post. For now just watch the video above or go to Settings> Device> Reset to Factory Defaults> Press 'Reset' and then let the Fire Stick go through the motions. It will take around 10 minutes to wipe everything and reset itself. You will then be prompted to pair your remote to the stick. Hold the remote close to the fire stick and hold the 'home' button for around 10 seconds until the stick recognizes the remote. Then re-sign back into your Amazon account and you should be good to go.
